Have you ever considered incorporating antique treasures in your garden? Repurposing and recycling your antique treasures develops a "green" garden while imparting a rustic charm. All it requires is a little bit of imagination and creativity, and the ordinary can become full of character and history.

Vintage garden statues are easily and artistically incorporated into your landscape; vintage settees, urns, fountains and sculptures are easily obtained from antique shops, relatives, or friends who don't see their potential. However, vintage garden statues and furniture are not the only items that can be used in the garden. A salvaged gate, porch support, or antique bed frame can be leaned against a wall or secured with posts, providing an unusual trellis for ivy or flowering vines.

A vintage teacart, wagon, or wheelbarrow can be filled with plants and literally wheeled to different areas of the garden as needed. Small grates or portions of an old trellis can be used as decorative accents on walls or as trivets for pots.

Ideas for flower pots are endless; an old bottomless chair can be used to elevate a pot, providing a place for the plant to grow and trail down. Old wash pots, wooden buckets, teapots with missing lids, tea cups and even a silver ice bucket can be turned into an unusual flower pot. Memory Pots, composed of broken china, glass, buttons, and other small memorabilia, make a different type of vase or pot. This artistic vase begins with an old vase or pot covered with plaster of paris then the broken china and other objects are attached.

Antique door knobs, salvaged from old houses, can be used along the tops of fence posts, adding an inspired touch to a mundane structure. Old bricks and tiles can be used for walkways--recycling rather than buying new.

Bottle trees can be purchased pre-formed, or simple rebar hammered, at different angles, into the ground near a shrub can make an appealing bottle tree shrub. This will allow you to incorporate your bottle collection in your garden, thus creating a colorful, almost prismatic, adornment.

Old chandeliers can also be repurposed into garden ornaments. Remove the wiring, paint the chandelier and hand in your favorite tree. It is ready for tea lights!

A vintage birdbath can easily be changed into a candle holder--just add sand or small pebbles to the birdbath and add your candles.

There are so many ideas and I have touched only on a few. Think about what you have and how you can use it. Take the simple and transform it into the unusual. Use your imagination and the ideas are endless, and the possibilities are confined by what you want to accomplish.

Let me say I've neglected this blog--I could blame it all on Christmas but honestly, the shop has been very busy and we had many projects.

Ann and I decorated a tree at The Johnson Center using vintage plastic Santa and reindeer ornaments. Snow covered every branch and ornament--we made a mess but it was beautiful!

Christmas Open House was successful in spite of the cold, wet weather.

But now it's time to move on to another season--Valentine's Day or "V Day" as it is affectionately called. We are all decorated and in the "heart" spirit! Check back for updates!

Mid Century Modern, re-purposed Art Deco, and school house Primitives!

This wonderful Mid Century Modern sectional sofa is in mint condition! And a bargain at $250! It would be perfect in an apartment, loft, or retreat!

The re-purposed Art Deco dresser/dressing table has been painted a classic black and distressed--a great urban apartment or Paris style! Again a bargain--$135. Visit Miss Hettie's for other special finds!

Dr Dennison has completed the move and he has stocked his booth with a wonderful Victorian sofa, green depression glass, art glass by the late Ed Walter, beautiful artwork, and much more.Ann (Village Antiques) has returned from a buying trip to Pennsylvania. She is delivering new merchandise every week. The new punch bowls are gorgeous and would be wonderful at a reception or tea. She has more china--complete sets by Limoges and others--and a beautiful array of Heisy glassware.

The DEB's (better known as Pat and Joyce) have just received a shipment from the mountains--furniture, glassware and much more!
Toni has delivered a variety of her original paintings. There are sweet angels, hummingbirds, and flowers. This is your chance to own an original by Toni.

Linda was lucky to have stumbled upon a Red Wing Company "Round Up" 24" long tray in mint condition! This tray was introduced in January, 1958--a real find for the collector! The Sweet Peas line of children's clothing has been restocked. Each infant/child's dress is hand sewn from vintage linens.Cottage & Cabin Interiors has added several new items as well--a beachy cake plate would be perfect for your beach retreat.

Bobby and Gail have collaborated on another bench constructed from a cute headboard and foot board--each one is an original! New "dealers" are moving into On The Square Antiques! We're in a bit of a mess, but everyone is working exceptionally hard to help them move in!

Bert & Ginger are moving into one side of the mezzanine. They have tons of goodies--furniture, glassware, dolls, primitives, books, and even vintage hats. Jacquelyn Floyd is adding her special touch to the downstairs hallway!The artwork has brightened the space and her 1950's tables lend a retro feel to the area.

Anne & Ann have brought in a selection of antique bottles-- all colors, especially purple/lavender, a wonderful Watt pottery pitcher, vintage "cottagey" prints,a beautiful gold framed beveled mirror,and a wonderful primitive cabinet, filled with antique/vintage kitchen utensils.

Linda is back from Breyerfest with loads of collectible horses and Hagen-renaker figurines!

Cottage & Cabin Interiors just delivered two new footstools--a striking animal print and a sweet toile stool and matching pillow.

Miss Hettie's has an distressed "anthropologie style" square table and 4 white mis-matched chairs. The green pitcher and tumblers and ruby red glasses sparkle against the white table.
Also, available "in the window" is a hand-painted child's rocker (courtesy of Sweethomewherever) and a precious wicker doll carriage with hand-sewn linens!

Miss Hettie--me actually (the writer of the blog/office manager/problem solver/you name it).

I began my blog last year--naturally I volunteered to write the one for the shop. Most people know me as Gail--the Miss Hettie (my mom's) name was a suggestion from a dear friend. My real desire is to have a "Venue House" named Miss Hettie's, but it's just not in the cards at the moment for this "dealer".

At the antique shop, I occupy the front window and the mezzanine. My real love is re purposing old furniture, but it's becoming difficult to find the old things.

Along with my reclaimed furniture, I sell a variety of items--beautiful vintage cake plates, retro kitchen items, tea cups, punch bowls, figurines, samplers and many other items.
I also collaborate on different projects--hand-crafted benches, painted furniture, and the Sweet Peas line of infant and toddler dresses.

yes, we always need "one more thing" and this is the name of another group (dare I say "dealers") at the shop. Mary & Peggy also travel out of state to shop and always bring interesting and unique finds to the shop from vintage cabinets, comfortable chairs, unique doors, to china, fabric, and paintings.Mary & Peggy also occupy the vault--a concrete steel re-enforced vault that is original to the building. The vault is stocked with small glassware, bolts of decorator fabric, a wonderful mirror, and even a small wicker table.

Yes, another "group". . .

Actually the DEB's began as two sisters and a sister-in-law, all sharing the same room/space! That was fun--actually entertaining! One sister soon decided the antique business wasn't for her and the other two expanded into two then three room/spaces.

Joyce's merchandise includes a wonderful enamel top kitchen table, beautiful old library table, drop leaf desk and many other items. Pat migrated to the blue room--yes, it is painted baby blue--and the back room (my favorite room after the mezzanine). The back room has so much character--painted concrete wall, brick exposed wall, exposed beams, heavy wooden door with a transom window above to let in extra sunlight.

Currently we have 12 people selling in our shop. I hesitate to call us "dealers" because, as someone once pointed out, we don't "deal cards"--we just sell merchandise.

We are as diverse as summer and winter, with merchandise ranging from Victorian antiques to mid century modern to 21st century. We offer re-upholstered furniture, hand-stitch samplers and sayings and re-purposed/redesigned furniture. We have china, crystal, some sterling flatware, and vintage semi-precious jewelry.

The upcoming posts will introduce our gang individually, or as the group we identify them with.

to "the antique shop", as we affectionately call our store. The shop actually opened five years ago and was designated "On The Square Antiques" because we are, literally, located on the town square in Troy, Alabama, home of Troy University. Housed originally in the "Gellerstedt" building, a wonderful 3 story building that had the steepest stairs imaginable, we operated there for 3 years.

Moving in January 2007 to the "Brantley Brothers building", we found a permanent home. Our current building was constructed around the turn of the century (yes, 1900) and today has the original stain glass panel in the building front facade that proclaims, "Brantley Bros Mercantile Co.".

The interior of our shop has wonderful character--a steel reinforced walk-in vault (possibly used to store firearms and ammunition), 2 floors, the original mahogany panels in the ceiling, and a wonderful mezzanine! And for those of you who aren't familiar with a mezzanine, it is considered a "half-floor" or balcony above the first floor.

The shop features almost everything imaginable--fine glassware, pottery, Victorian furniture, primitives, re-designed/re purposed furniture, hand-made farm house tables, Bryer model horses,vintage books, retro and mid century modern collectibles, and many other items.
